Logic Case Study: When Learning doesn’t have to be boring.

What is Logic?

Brilliant.org is an interactive learning platform that helps people become better problem-solvers through bite-sized lessons in Math, Science, Data, and Computer Science.

One of Brilliant’s most popular courses is Logic. It teaches logical deduction through engaging scenarios involving sentient robots and interactive puzzles. With 20,000 to 30,000 visitors each month, Logic consistently ranks as one of the platform’s top-performing courses.

After Brilliant’s brand refresh, the internal team aimed to update the course visuals to match the new standard of quality.

Project Goal

The team set out to produce a new batch of Logic lessons that aligned with the refreshed visual identity and met the high expectations of Brilliant users. Over the course of a month, 18 new lessons were created.

My main responsibility was to develop a consistent narrative theme across the levels and illustrate each scenario to match. The style was based on an earlier illustration I had created for the New User Experience, which served as a benchmark for visual detail.

The Process

I started by meeting with the course’s lead producer to understand the learning objectives and any content-specific constraints. Although each level introduced new and more complex logic concepts, we agreed that a loose narrative thread would help tie the course together visually.

I explored potential scenarios through sketches and collaborated with the Creative Director to align on a direction. After several iterations, we decided on three key visual motifs to carry across the course: age, competition, height comparisons, and shifting moods.

The Outcome

Over several weeks, I partnered with the producer and occasionally another illustrator to complete illustrations for 18 lessons. After final delivery, I took the initiative to revisit and polish the illustrations for the first four levels, ensuring consistency and cohesion across the entire course.

In summary:

  • Delivered 30 final illustrations in one month

  • Created a cohesive visual narrative across 18 lessons

  • Updated the full course to meet Brilliant’s new content and visual standards

  • Received positive feedback from users who appreciated both the improved visuals and learning experience
